The Associated Press got an internal memo that says the Trump administration is getting ready to review all of the nearly 200,000 refugees who came to the US while President Joe Biden was in office.
Joseph Edlow, the head of USCIS, signed the memo. It says that under Biden,
processing refugees focused on "expediency" and "quantity"
rather than thorough vetting. Because of this, USCIS will interview all
refugees who came to the US between January 20, 2021 and February 20, 2025
again. Within three months, we should get a list of people who need to be
screened again.
As of now, green card approvals for refugees who came during this time have
been put on hold.
The decision has worried refugees who have already moved to the U.S. and are
starting new lives there. Advocacy groups are likely to sue over the decision,
saying it threatens stability for people who have already been thoroughly
screened.
Trump Administration orders for Refugees must apply for permanent residency one year after arriving and can
apply for citizenship after five years. However, this process is currently on
hold for those who are affected.
