On Monday (US time), Sergio Gor, a close aide to US President Donald Trump, was officially sworn in as the US Ambassador to India during a ceremony at the Oval Office. The 79-year-old President led the event, which also gave big news about the India-US trade deal that has been talked about a lot.
One of the most important parts of the ceremony was when President Trump said that the "very high" tariffs on India would be lowered. He told reporters, "Well, right now the tariffs on India are very high because of the Russian oil." And they don't do the Russian oil anymore. It has been cut down a lot. Yes, we are going to lower the tariffs.
The Trump administration had already put high tariffs of about 50 percent on Indian imports, which was one of the highest rates ever charged to any country. Washington had criticized India's decision to keep buying Russian oil during the Ukraine crisis, so the decision was made.
Senior US officials had told India many times to stop relying on Russian energy supplies so much because they were worried that this trade was indirectly helping Russia's war efforts. Even with these problems, the appointment of Sergio Gor is seen as a big step toward improving relations between the two countries and opening the door for new talks about trade and economic cooperation.
