A UAE-led international law enforcement initiative has delivered one of the largest coordinated crackdowns on environmental crime in the Amazon Basin, resulting in 839 arrests, more than 1,045 field operations, and the seizure of assets worth over $280 million in just 17 days. The campaign, known as Operation Green Shield 2026, brought together law enforcement agencies from the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil to combat organised environmental crimes threatening one of the world’s most vital ecosystems.
The results were announced by Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, who described the operation as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in addressing cross-border environmental challenges.
Record Enforcement Results in Just 17 Days
Conducted throughout July, Operation Green Shield 2026 focused on dismantling criminal networks involved in illegal activities that threaten the Amazon’s biodiversity and natural resources.
Within the 17-day operation, the involved authorities conducted 1,045 operations in the field, making 839 arrests while confiscating equipment, materials, and other property connected with environmental crimes, estimated at a value of over $280 million. This is one of the largest multinational law enforcement operations that have ever been conducted in the Amazon Basin.
The officials noted that through this coordinated operation, the involved countries could address themselves to these criminal syndicates.
UAE Strengthens Global Environmental Cooperation
This latest campaign is an extension of the environmental protection policy of the UAE through the International Initiative of Law Enforcement for Climate (I2LEC), which was founded in collaboration with the UNODC in 2023.
This initiative was formed to enhance international cooperation between law enforcement authorities in combating various environmental crimes, including illegal mining, illegal trade of wildlife, illegal logging, and other destructive acts against the ecosystem. Operation Green Shield 2026 is one of the notable operations under this initiative.
According to Sheikh Saif, the campaign is an illustration of how the vision of the UAE includes making international cooperation one of the foundations of solving such challenges.
