The Zack Polanski controversy has intensified after Reform UK reported the Green Party’s deputy leader and London Assembly member to the Metropolitan Police over an Instagram post that featured an image of a man wearing a T-shirt displaying a guillotine beneath the words, “We’re only making plans for Nigel.” The slogan references the 1979 song by British band XTC, but Reform UK argues that, in the context of party leader Nigel Farage, the imagery amounts to an incitement of violence.
Polanski had shared a collaborative Instagram post containing multiple photographs from a Green Party event. According to the Green Party, he accepted the collaboration request without noticing all the images included in the post. Once the controversial image was identified, it was immediately removed.
Reform UK Demands Police Action
The Zack Polanski controversy escalated when Reform UK leader Nigel Farage publicly criticized the post, arguing that similar content shared by him would likely have resulted in immediate police action. Farage stated that Polanski should face the same level of scrutiny and accountability.
Zia Yusuf, the spokesman for Reform UK’s home affairs, has stated that the case has been officially reported to the Metropolitan Police and a report will also be filed with the monitoring officer at the Greater London Assembly, where Polanski is an elected member.
The image, according to Yusuf, was “a call for the beheading of Nigel Farage,” and could amount to an incitement to murder as opposed to being mere political satire. He also made a connection between the incident and the wider context of threats against public figures in the United Kingdom.
Green Party Distances Itself from the Image
Responding to the growing Zack Polanski controversy, the Green Party issued a statement emphasizing that neither Polanski nor the party supports or condones violent imagery or threatening messages.
According to the party’s spokesperson, Polanski agreed to make the Instagram collaboration without realizing that the second image included the offending T-shirt. According to the statement, the picture was deleted right away when he became aware of it.
Further, the party reiterated that Polanski “unambiguously rejects this kind of dangerous messaging” and denounced the shirt for being “in extremely poor taste,” especially at a time when there are increased worries about the security of elected officials.
The party additionally appealed for more civility in politics by asking political leaders and their supporters to refrain from fueling hostility.
Police Begin Preliminary Enquiries
The Metropolitan Police stated that the officers were investigating a tip from a third party about the image on social media. At this point, no investigation has been declared by the police, and the BBC has mentioned that Polanski himself was not contacted by the officers.
The Zack Polanski controversy therefore remains at the enquiry stage while authorities assess whether any criminal offences may have been committed.
Photographer Accepts Responsibility
It is worth noting the fact that the freelance photographer, who posted those pictures online, admitted his fault and accepted full responsibility for posting this particular controversial photograph.
In his post, he said that he used it in a satirical way and asked for forgiveness from Polanski, explaining that the Green politician was unaware of the entire contents of the post which was done collaboratively.
Also, the freelance photographer admitted reporting himself to the police, saying that all the criticism should be addressed to the author of the post and not Polanski..
Political Violence Remains a Sensitive Issue
The Zack Polanski controversy has come amidst fears over the security of politicians in Britain. The situation has been worsened by the recent murder of Ann Widdecombe, a leading member of Reform UK party, and the anniversary of the murders of Labour Party MP Jo Cox and Conservative Party MP Sir David Amess.
After Widdecombe was murdered early this month, Polanski himself appealed for more security of political leaders, saying that he has always been afraid of any attacks on elected officials and would be glad to receive additional security from the authorities.
All the above-mentioned factors have made the present situation quite sensitive, as all the political parties are increasingly being asked to make sure that there is no threat of any violence in their rhetoric.
Looking Ahead
The Zack Polanski controversy reveals how difficult it is for political figures in this era of social media where collaborative posts become topics of national debate in a matter of seconds. Whereas Reform UK claims that the post incited danger, the Green Party believes that it was an innocent mistake and has been corrected immediately.
The investigation by the police will certainly create more discussions regarding the issue of political accountability, responsibility on the Internet, freedom of speech, and respectfulness in public discourse amid political polarization.
