Key Highlights :
Uber and Momenta will begin robotaxi trials in Munich with onboard safety drivers in 2026.
It is the European launch for Momenta, following on from the company's experience in China and deals that it has secured with the big German car manufacturers.
Key Background :
Uber's alliance with Momenta is an extension of its wider vision to grow autonomous car services in overseas markets and solidify its foothold in the European continent. Momenta, established in 2016, has emerged as China's leading autonomous driving firm, testing robotaxis from 2018. By joining forces with Uber, the firm gets immediate entry into a new market while basing its tested technologies and existing connections with German auto manufacturers.
The timing of the Munich launch is paramount, with the European autonomous vehicle market growing more competitive. Lyft just revealed a partnership with Baidu to bring robotaxis to Germany and the UK, which shows how quickly deployments are accelerating in major European cities. Uber's approach places it well to compete by providing users with additional choices and having multiple partners worldwide to provide full coverage.
Uber's autonomous presence is already across multiple continents. In the United States, Waymo's self-driving cars are available to Uber users in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. In the Middle East, Uber has deployed services in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh through Momenta, WeRide, and Pony.ai partnerships, with Dubai coming next. In the UK, Uber's collaboration with London-based Wayve will shortly have Level 4 autonomous vehicles driving on public roads. These initiatives combined attest to how determined Uber is to become one of the world's leading autonomous mobility players.
Munich was selected intentionally as the launch site for Uber and Momenta's European tests. The city is famous for its car history and hosts top German car producers. Its robust engineering foundation and cutting-edge infrastructure make it a perfect location to test, develop, and develop autonomous services. Uber's management has emphasized Munich's symbolic significance as a city that has defined automotive history and is now ready to define its future.
Germany's autonomous vehicle regulatory regime is one of the toughest in the world, with geo-fenced areas fully tested and approved. For Momenta, it is both a chance to prove its technology under some of the most rigorous safety regimes and an exercise to do so. The pilot will initially introduce human safety operators gradually before regulators give the thumbs-up to fully driverless journeys.
In addition to this program, Momenta is expanding its global footprint. It is poised to introduce commercial robotaxi operations in Shanghai by the end of the year 2025 and has grown its advanced driver assistance systems to more than 400,000 vehicles. In partnership with automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, Momenta is solidifying its position as a critical enabler of the shift from assisted driving to fully autonomous driving.
